My first assignment
I wanted to write about the first painting that I was commissioned ex professo. It had to be a large canvas and contain electric pink, or fluorine, because it was a color that the client needed. The piece has two main effects: 1. A first impression of abstraction caused by contrasted color spots within the same color palette creams and pastels.
2. When the gaze rests or approaches the canvas, it will distinguish the figures of a man and a woman with baroque poses, very blurred but perfectly matched. Topic: It is a tribute to Guido Reni and his work Atalanta and Hippomenes.
Atalanta was the fastest runner in mythology and the suitors who dared to challenge her died if they did not reach her. Hippomenes, dropping a few golden apples, made her distract herself, thus being able to advance her and marry her. Atalanta had liked Hippomenes, she let herself be distracted so that he would not die.
Atalanta's legs draw a triangle with the inverted shape of a constellation: your constellation. Hence, I would also like to include the silhouette of the stars in Capricorn's answer, as a parallel to the fact that this Atalanta was the client who commissioned the work. In the background there are different blurs in contrast to the textures of the scraping, the acrylic stains or the dotting of the pastels. Technique:
In the original work, the gauzes, which barely cover the bodies of the characters, are vaporous and light; in the painting I wanted to invert this effect to generate abstraction. The fabrics are opaque and solid, with a lot of product, and the transparent and fragile bodies, barely sketched: two ghosts that cross their feet so that they are not blown away by the wind.
If within the work, most of the composition is little sketched, the golden apples are more figurative as a nod to the fact that everything could have been like this, but the choice of style was less classicist, in an already quite classic story. With the technique I try to approach the avant-garde and put a contemporary painting in the living room of the person who commissioned the canvas.
In addition, the apples are not golden but fluorescent pink, the color he asked me for. The technique used is mixed and includes oil, acrylic, pastels, charcoal, etc. Reading the piece:
The gaze goes from left to right and from top to bottom following the triangles formed by the legs of the characters, the inverted triangle that is formed between the two figures, in addition to the triangle of the feet of both crossing and, finally, the triangle of the constellation of the client and the one that forms the three apples. The title:
Thinking about this mythology story, which evoked her, and being one of my favorite paintings by Guido Reni that I always stop to see in El Prado, I wanted to unite both concepts, in addition to including the irony of giving two half-naked figures to a person who makes costumes in cinema and television. For all this, and for the humor that I know the client, I did not think of another title for the painting than that of Kale Barroka. Jero. July 2, 2024.
